Subterranean termites have a sophisticated social structure within their colonies, comprising three distinct castes reproductives, workers, and soldiers. The reproductives consist of the queen, king, and alates, with the queen being the largest and most pivotal member. She can lay up to 1,000 eggs daily, ensuring the colony’s growth and survival.
Alates, also known as swarmers, are winged termites responsible for establishing new colonies. They have dark brown to black bodies and slightly milky-colored wings, measuring about ¼ to ½ inch in length. Workers, on the other hand, lack wings and have cream-colored bodies, while soldiers possess large mandibles, flat, wide bodies, and a darker head.
Subterranean termites are relentless feeders, continuously consuming wood and other cellulose-based products 24/7. They are particularly attracted to moisture, and to access their food sources, they construct mud tubes that protect them from the open air.
